North Korea has constructed a new uranium enrichment facility at its Yongbyon nuclear complex and expanded operations at another site near Pyongyang, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said, according to Reuters.
The IAEA said satellite imagery and open-source information indicate that a new two-storey building at Yongbyon could accommodate up to 28 centrifuge cascades. Images from a June visit by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un showed centrifuge equipment installed on both floors, the report said.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi called the continued activity and reported growth in weapons-grade nuclear material production a serious concern. The agency said the developments violate UN Security Council resolutions.
The IAEA has had no inspectors inside North Korea since 2009. Pyongyang rejects the agency’s authority and says its nuclear weapons status is irreversible.
