An independent United Nations commission has accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, marking the UN’s most sweeping judgment on the war to date.
The 72-page report, released Tuesday by the UN Human Rights Council’s commission of inquiry, alleged that Israel carried out “four genocidal acts” since Hamas’ October 7, 2023 assault, including mass killings, starvation, and deliberately inflicting conditions to destroy Palestinians as a group.
“It is clear there is an intent to destroy the Palestinians in Gaza through acts that meet the criteria set forth in the Genocide Convention.”

The Palestinian health ministry claims nearly 65,000 people have been killed, though it does not differentiate between fighters and civilians. Israel has rejected the report as “false” and accused the UN body of parroting Hamas propaganda.

U.S. Senators Chris Van Hollen and Jeff Merkley have charged that Israel is carrying out “ethnic cleansing,” while international human rights groups echo similar claims.
