The Trump administration has expanded sanctions against Iran’s aviation sector, targeting 27 Iranian airlines and dozens of entities accused of supporting the transport of weapons and illicit cargo.

The Treasury Department said the measures are part of its campaign to isolate Iran’s economy and restrict its access to global markets. The sanctions also target intermediaries in Turkey, Malaysia, Kazakhstan and the United Arab Emirates.

The restrictions include additional measures against Mahan Air, which has faced U.S. counterterrorism sanctions since 2019 over alleged support for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Treasury also suspended three general licenses that had allowed certain overflight payments.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that companies conducting business with the sanctioned airlines could risk losing access to the U.S.-dominated global financial system.

The latest action comes as oil prices rise amid the Iran conflict. Brent crude reached about $99 a barrel Tuesday, while President Donald Trump predicted prices would fall sharply after the war ends.
