The USS George Washington Carrier Strike Group has arrived in the Middle East as part of a scheduled Navy deployment and is expected to relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has spent more than 270 days at sea supporting U.S. combat operations against Iran.
The Lincoln, carrying roughly 5,000 sailors and Marines, has faced reports of supply shortages and mental health concerns during its extended deployment.
The George Washington's arrival will provide relief for the Lincoln but leaves the U.S. Navy temporarily without an aircraft carrier in the Western Pacific after the strike group's departure from Japan. American forces continue operations related to the naval blockade of Iranian ports.
