The US State Department imposed visa sanctions on five European figures, including a former EU commissioner, accusing them of pressuring American tech platforms to censor speech.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the individuals led coordinated efforts to suppress American viewpoints.
The move reflects the Trump administration’s broader pushback against European digital regulations and what it calls foreign censorship of US speech, according to CNN.
Those sanctioned include Thierry Breton, linked to the EU’s Digital Services Act, and leaders from groups focused on combating online disinformation. European officials quickly condemned the action.
The announcement by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio that @ThierryBreton and four other European citizens are “not welcome” in the United States is more than a diplomatic incident. It is a political signal – and a worrying one.

French President Emmanuel Macron called it intimidation that undermines Europe’s digital sovereignty.
The European Commission said it is seeking clarification and may respond. Rubio warned additional sanctions could follow if foreign actors continue actions that target American speakers and companies.
