President Donald Trump has announced that the United States plans to end its annual military assistance to Israel by the end of 2026, arguing that the country is economically strong enough to finance its own defence.

Trump said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had initiated discussions on ending the assistance, acknowledging that Israel could purchase weapons without American financial support. He also criticised Democrats for using the aid arrangement as a political issue.

Democratic Party Chairman Yair Golan condemned the proposal, describing it as a serious threat to Israel's security during an ongoing conflict.

The administration has clarified that Israel will retain access to American military equipment through purchases, even if direct financial assistance ends. However, the existing US-Israel memorandum of understanding, which provides approximately $3.8 billion in annual military assistance, remains in effect until 2028.

The proposed change would mark a significant shift in the longstanding military partnership between the two countries.
