A US Navy submarine sank an Iranian warship in international waters on Wednesday in what officials say is the first time an American submarine has destroyed a combat vessel with a torpedo since World War II.
US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth confirmed the strike during a Pentagon briefing, stating that the Iranian ship IRIS Dena was hit by a torpedo and quickly sank. The Pentagon released video showing a large explosion near the ship’s stern before it went down.

Sri Lankan authorities launched a rescue operation after receiving a distress call. Officials said 87 bodies have been recovered and 32 sailors rescued, with about 130 people believed to have been on board.
Iran condemned the strike. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called it an “atrocity at sea” and warned the United States would regret the action.
According to US Central Command, the strike is part of a broader campaign that has already destroyed more than 17 Iranian naval vessels.
