At least 29 people, mostly children, were killed Thursday when a massive fire tore through two schools and a densely populated residential neighborhood in the rebel-held eastern Congolese city of Bukavu.

The blaze broke out in the morning in the Chimpunda district, rapidly engulfing the Ujamaa and Furaha schools as panicked students rushed toward narrow exits, triggering a deadly stampede.

Hundreds of nearby wooden homes were also reduced to ashes. Dozens of injured survivors suffering from severe burns and smoke inhalation remain hospitalized, as local health workers warn the provisional death toll could rise.
