Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faced a walkout by dozens of UN delegates as he began his address to the General Assembly on Thursday, leaving sections of the chamber empty.

The Palestinian Mission to the UN had urged representatives to collectively leave the hall in protest of Israel’s military actions in Gaza and its broader policies toward the Palestinians.

Netanyahu described the departing delegates as “moral cowards” and defended Israel’s military strikes on Iran, saying the decision was among the easiest he had made and claiming that some world leaders privately supported the action.

His address also came amid criticism from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who has accused Netanyahu of war crimes. Israeli Ambassador Danny Danon defended Netanyahu’s appearance at the UN.

The speech took place weeks before Israel’s expected general election, adding a domestic political dimension to the visit.
