A gunman opened fire at Citibank's sprawling business complex in suburban Brandon on Wednesday, killing a woman before an armed security guard confronted and fatally shot him.
Authorities said the shooter breached the perimeter, crashed a vehicle into an outdoor dining area, and killed the victim before advancing toward the building's cafeteria.
An onsite security guard quickly engaged the attacker, trading gunfire and preventing further casualties among the roughly 3,200 employees present on the campus.
"Was there a potential for further violence? Absolutely," said Frank Losat, chief deputy with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, commending the guard's rapid intervention as law enforcement and federal agents responded to secure the facility.
