The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has launched a landmark five-year mission to Mars’ moons, aiming to collect and return the first-ever samples from Phobos, the larger of the pair.

The ambitious Martian Moons eXploration (MMX) mission will deploy a robotic lander and a German-French rover to harvest dust, soil, and rock from the enigmatic moon's surface. If successful, the spacecraft will carry its precious cosmic cargo back to Earth in 2031.

Scientists hope the samples will solve a longstanding solar system mystery: whether Phobos and Deimos are captured asteroids or debris from an ancient planetary impact.
