President Donald Trump defended his foreign policy approach toward North Korea, asserting that his personal rapport with Kim Jong Un is crucial now that Pyongyang possesses a precise, high-stakes nuclear arsenal.

Speaking to reporters, Trump cited an unusually specific figure for North Korea’s capabilities, claiming the nation now holds "57 very powerful nuclear weapons". While blaming past administrations for letting the arsenal build up, Trump argued that maintaining a solid relationship with Kim is a vital asset for national security—and drew a firm line against allowing Iran to acquire similar capabilities.

Reporter: "... with Kim Jong Un?"

Trump: "I can't tell you that, but I get along with him. And you know what? The fact that I get along with him, that's a good thing, not a bad thing. He has 57 very powerful nuclear weapons. Should have never allowed it to happen. They should have never allowed it. If I were president, I wouldn't have allowed it, but he's got them. I get along with him very well. I can't let Iran have a nuclear weapon. And I know Kim Jong Un very well, and he's going to be fine. As long as we have a smart president, he's going to be fine. If we have a dumb president, then he's probably not going to be so fine."
