Fast-moving brush fires stoked by blistering heat and gusty Santa Ana winds flared across Southern California on Thursday evening, forcing precautionary power shutoffs for tens of thousands of residents.
In the coastal enclave of Malibu, a rapidly expanding blaze sent thick smoke billowing over the hills, triggering urgent evacuation orders and warnings across a wide swath of the Santa Monica Mountains.
With red flag warnings in effect, emergency crews scrambled to contain multiple regional flare-ups as utility operators cut electricity to high-risk areas to prevent downed power lines from sparking further catastrophic fires.
