North Korea test-fired two types of submarine-launched strategic cruise missiles off its east coast on Wednesday, state media reported, marking a fresh escalation in Pyongyang’s drive to build a sea-based nuclear capability.
The state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said the tests were conducted to evaluate the combat readiness of its underwater weapons systems and sharpen the navy’s strategic mission capabilities.
Senior military officials supervised the drills, which come as leader Kim Jong Un accelerates efforts to expand the country’s nuclear-capable arsenal. Regional neighbors and international monitors remain on high alert amid the regime’s intensifying wave of weapons testing.
