An online database with more than 4 million pages of government documents is now deploying artificial intelligence to make searches easier for Americans.

The Oversight Project, a government watchdog group that runs the site Doc Depot, says new AI features will allow users to quickly get answers buried on the 100th page of a large report or investigate a wide swath of primary sources.

“We’ve spent years fighting tooth and nail to pull records out of the government, many of which have propelled some of the biggest stories in America,” Oversight Project President Mike Howell said in a statement. “But what good are all these documents if a busy, everyday American doesn’t have the time to make sense of them all or read an entire congressional report or the like? This tool solves that problem.”

Doc Depot added a new AI research assistant and a publicly available Model Context Protocol server, which lets users connect their own AI agents, such as Claude, ChatGPT, and Grok, to the archive, according to the Oversight Project.

The site’s 4 million pages are spread across 196,379 separate government documents, which the organization obtained through the Freedom of Information Act requests and congressional correspondence.

The Oversight Project has sued for records and exposed the excessive use of former President Joe Biden’s autopen for presidential actions. It used as an example of its AI tools a request for the system to create a timeline of pardons signed by autopen during Biden’s term.

The organization has also released numerous documents from the Justice Department on deceased convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein; from the National Institutes of Health regarding COVID-19; and FBI photos from the search of Biden’s Delaware home for classified documents.

“I’m incredibly impressed by our team dedicating years to gathering this universe of information, painstakingly logging and organizing it, and then building an advanced and innovative system to make it all user-friendly and accessible,” Howell said. “This is what the future of oversight looks like.”
