Global gender parity has reached 69.2%, its highest level since the World Economic Forum began measuring the gap 20 years ago, but full parity remains an estimated 120 years away at the current pace of progress.
The WEF’s 2026 Global Gender Gap Report, covering 145 economies, said recent gains remain fragile, with political empowerment showing signs of reversal.
Political empowerment remains the weakest of the four measured areas, with only 22.1% of the global gap closed. The WEF also highlighted women's continued underrepresentation in senior leadership and artificial intelligence, where women account for fewer than one in five AI engineers.
WEF Managing Director Saadia Zahidi said parity is not inevitable and urged governments and employers to adopt policies that have demonstrated progress.
