Peri Park in Fairfax, California, has been temporarily closed after a significant flea infestation was discovered in the playground, according to town officials.
The problem was identified after multiple complaints from parents and grandparents, with fleas found in the park's sand and wood chip play areas.
Because Fairfax prohibits pesticide use on public property, officials have opted for a non-toxic solution instead of chemical treatments.
According to town officials, heat probes and commercial steam cleaning will be used to raise temperatures in the affected areas and kill the fleas while complying with local regulations.
Residents have largely supported the pesticide-free approach, although some expressed concern about the potential risk the infestation poses to young children until the playground is declared safe to reopen.
