What China’s New Spy Claims Reveal About Rising Tensions With Japan

China escalated its criticism of Japan on Wednesday, announcing it had “cracked a series of espionage cases” involving Japanese intelligence agencies, according to the Ministry of State Security.

The ministry said the alleged Japanese infiltration threatened China’s “core secrets” and vowed a sweeping counter-intelligence crackdown.

No details on the cases were released, though China has recently prosecuted Japanese nationals for spying, including a detained Astellas Pharma employee.

The statement comes amid a sharp diplomatic dispute over Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s recent claim that a Chinese attack on Taiwan could constitute a “survival-threatening situation,” allowing Japan’s Self-Defense Forces to intervene.

Beijing accused Takaichi of abandoning Japan’s long-held strategic ambiguity and reviving “militaristic ambitions.”

China warned that any Japanese military involvement in the Taiwan Strait would be considered aggression.

Bilateral ties were already strained over territorial disputes, Taiwan, Fukushima water releases, and rising nationalist politics in both countries.
