The U.S. Supreme Court has cleared the way for the Trump administration’s Justice Department to dismiss the criminal case against former White House adviser Steve Bannon, reported by CNN.

The decision follows a request from federal prosecutors to drop charges originally filed during the Biden administration.

According to the report, Bannon was convicted in 2022 for defying a congressional subpoena linked to the January 6 investigation and served a four-month prison sentence in 2024. Despite completing his sentence, Bannon continued to challenge the conviction.

The report said both Bannon and the Justice Department asked the Supreme Court to vacate an earlier appeals court ruling and allow the case to be dismissed.

The Justice Department argued that dropping the case aligns with its prosecutorial discretion and serves the interests of justice.

Bannon had maintained he relied on legal advice and executive privilege claims when refusing to comply with the subpoena, a defense previously rejected by lower courts.
