President Donald Trump said Europe has agreed to release large diesel reserves as wars in Eastern Europe and the Middle East strain global fuel supplies, according to his Truth Social post.
EU officials are preparing crisis talks on diesel prices. Reuters reported France proposed releasing 50 million barrels of diesel from EU reserves, alongside 50 million barrels of crude from International Energy Agency members, although CNBC could not independently verify the proposal.
The US supplied about half of Europe’s diesel imports in August, according to the IEA. Energy analysts said the crisis reflects broader global energy shortages, with Macquarie’s Walt Chancellor arguing that restoring oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz is central to easing pressure.
