Former public health official Abdul El-Sayed secured a closely watched victory in Michigan's Democratic Senate primary, defeating moderate Rep. Haley Stevens despite being heavily outspent, reported by CNN.
The win sets up a November contest against Republican Rep. Mike Rogers and is being viewed as a major test of the Democratic Party's progressive movement.
His victory came despite significant outside spending supporting Stevens, including funding from groups linked to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).
CNN said the Michigan result could shape the Democratic Party's direction ahead of the 2028 presidential race.
Elsewhere, Missouri Rep. Wesley Bell defeated progressive challenger Cori Bush, while other primary contests highlighted continuing ideological divisions between progressive and establishment Democrats. Several key governor and congressional races were also decided ahead of November's general election.
