Sergey Brin, Google's co-founder, is returning to a more active management role as the company seeks to accelerate the development and commercialization of its Gemini artificial intelligence model.
According to the Financial Times, citing people familiar with the matter, Google has restructured its AI leadership to strengthen its position against rivals including OpenAI and Anthropic.
The report said the shift places greater emphasis on turning AI research into products and revenue.
Demis Hassabis, who previously led Google DeepMind's research efforts, has moved into the role of chairman while Koray Kavukcuoglu has taken over day-to-day leadership of DeepMind.
Hassabis has also become Alphabet's chief scientist, focusing on longer-term AI strategy.
Brin is expected to directly oversee Gemini's development and commercialization. He co-founded Google with Larry Page in 1998 and previously supported major AI initiatives, including Google Brain and the acquisition of DeepMind.
His renewed involvement comes as Google faces growing pressure to keep pace in the rapidly evolving AI market.
