At least nine people are dead after the deadliest school shooting in Canada in decades struck Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, according to CNN and CBC News. Police said six victims were found dead inside the local secondary school Tuesday afternoon.

Another person died on the way to a hospital. Authorities later discovered two more bodies at a nearby home.

The suspected shooter, identified as a woman, was found dead at the school from a self-inflicted injury. Officials have not released names or confirmed how many victims were children.

About 25 people were treated at a medical center, with two airlifted in critical condition. Superintendent Ken Floyd of the British Columbia Royal Canadian Mounted Police said investigators are still working to determine a motive.

Mass shootings are rare in Canada, which has stricter gun laws than the United States. Prime Minister Mark Carney and local leaders offered condolences as the small community mourns.
