An armed man was shot and killed early Sunday after breaching the secure perimeter around President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, according to the U.S. Secret Service.

Authorities said the 21-year-old man entered the property around 1:30 a.m. and was confronted by Secret Service agents and a deputy from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

He was carrying a shotgun and a fuel can. After refusing orders to comply and raising the weapon, officers opened fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No law enforcement personnel were injured.

Trump and the first lady were in Washington at the time and were briefed on the incident.

Investigators said the man, who was from North Carolina, had a history of mental health struggles and appeared fixated on conspiracy theories involving Jeffrey Epstein.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation. Secret Service agents involved have been placed on administrative leave under standard protocol.
