What India’s $80 Billion Boeing Plan Signals About The U.S. Trade Deal

India is prepared to purchase up to $80 billion worth of aircraft from Boeing, signaling deeper trade ties with the United States following a newly announced bilateral deal.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said orders are ready, though not yet placed. Including engines and spare parts, aircraft-related imports from the U.S. could exceed $100 billion.

The announcement comes after President Donald Trump said Washington and New Delhi had agreed to a trade pact cutting U.S. tariffs on Indian goods to 18 percent and eliminating Indian duties on American products.

Trump also claimed India would buy $500 billion in U.S. goods, a figure experts have called unrealistic.

India has not confirmed several U.S. claims, including zero tariffs and a halt to Russian oil imports.

Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has accused the government of surrendering on tariffs. A joint statement finalizing the first phase of the deal is expected within days.
