President Donald Trump is set to announce a $15 billion project to build what the White House calls the largest steel plant in US history, according to a White House official.

Minnesota-based Mesabi Metallics will develop the integrated operation, using iron ore from its recently opened Minnesota mine to produce steel at a new Iowa facility. The project is being promoted as a major investment in domestic manufacturing ahead of the November midterm elections.

The Iowa plant is expected to initially produce 7.5 million tons of steel annually, with capacity eventually reaching 10 million tons. The Minnesota mine represents a separate $2.5 billion investment.

According to the White House, the mine will create about 350 permanent jobs, while the Iowa steel plant is expected to employ at least 1,750 workers. Construction could generate another 5,000 to 6,000 jobs during the first phase.

White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers said the project reflects Trump’s effort to expand US manufacturing and bring industrial production back to America.
