OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the creator of the viral AI agent OpenClaw, Peter Steinberger, is joining the company as it accelerates its push into autonomous AI agents.
Altman said OpenClaw will continue as an open-source project under a foundation supported by OpenAI, while Steinberger will help shape the next generation of personal AI agents.

The tool gained rapid attention for its ability to autonomously complete tasks with minimal human input.
Financial terms were not disclosed, but OpenAI has been aggressively recruiting top talent amid rising competition from Google and Anthropic. Anthropic’s Claude models have recently gained traction among enterprise users.
OpenClaw has also spread quickly in China and can integrate with local AI models, raising interest as well as concerns among researchers about security risks tied to its open design.
