Vice President JD Vance is emerging as a central figure in efforts to negotiate peace with Iran, taking on what officials describe as the most critical assignment of his career.
According to Axios, President Donald Trump has formally tasked Vance with leading potential negotiations, alongside advisers Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
Vance has already engaged with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Gulf leaders, while also participating in indirect communication with Iran. The report said he is expected to become the top U.S. negotiator if formal talks begin.

Despite backing Israel, Vance had earlier expressed skepticism about the war’s trajectory and duration. According to U.S. and Israeli sources, he expects the conflict to continue for several more weeks.
Diplomatic efforts remain uncertain, with mediators awaiting approval from Iran’s leadership. Officials warn that failure to reach a deal could lead to further military escalation, even as internal tensions and mistrust complicate negotiations.
