China has accused the United States of pursuing "AI hegemonism" and warned it will take countermeasures after senior U.S. officials indicated that Chinese artificial intelligence companies could face investigations, sanctions and trade restrictions over allegations of technology theft.

According to the report, the dispute marks a further escalation in the growing technological rivalry between the world's two largest economies.

The report said White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Michael Kratsios alleged that Beijing-based AI firm Moonshot used distilled outputs from Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 model to develop its Kimi K3 system.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also warned that companies found to have engaged in covert AI model distillation could face financial sanctions or be added to the U.S. Commerce Department's Entity List.

Moonshot denied the allegations, stating that improvements in Kimi K3 resulted from its own architectural innovations rather than copying rival models.

According to the report, inclusion on the Entity List could significantly restrict access to U.S. semiconductors, software and other advanced technologies.
