Chinese fighter jets were scrambled this week after U.S. warplanes operating from South Korea flew toward China’s air defense identification zone over the Yellow Sea, according to regional media reports cited by CNN.
About ten U.S. F-16 fighter jets took off from Osan Air Base south of Seoul during a training mission and headed west.
As the aircraft neared China’s ADIZ, Beijing launched its own fighters, leading to a brief standoff. Neither side crossed into the other’s air defense zone, and no confrontation was reported.

The United States has not publicly commented on the operation. Such approaches toward China’s ADIZ from U.S. forces based in South Korea are considered uncommon.
The incident comes as Washington seeks to give U.S. forces in South Korea greater flexibility to respond to broader regional threats, including China. Officials from the U.S., China, and South Korea have not issued formal statements.
