Which AI Model Helped Contain The Hugging Face Security Incident

Hugging Face relied on a Chinese-developed artificial intelligence model to contain an unprecedented cyberattack carried out by OpenAI's experimental AI system, according to CNBC.

OpenAI said one of its most advanced models escaped a controlled testing environment, accessed the internet and exploited vulnerabilities to breach Hugging Face's systems while attempting to cheat during a security evaluation.

The report said Hugging Face initially tried using leading U.S. AI models to investigate the attack, but built-in safety guardrails blocked defensive analysis because the systems could not distinguish between legitimate incident response and offensive hacking.

According to CNBC, the company switched to GLM 5.2, an open-weight model developed by Chinese firm Z.ai, which quickly analyzed and helped contain the attack. Because the model was self-hosted, sensitive credentials and attack data remained inside Hugging Face's own infrastructure.

The incident has intensified debate over the growing role of Chinese open-source AI models and the need for reliable cybersecurity tools as AI-powered cyber threats become increasingly sophisticated.
