White House Escalates Clash With Harvard Over Federal Funding

The Trump administration announced it will appeal a federal court ruling that ordered the government to restore more than $2.6 billion in funding to Harvard University.

U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs, an Obama appointee, ruled that the administration’s decision to withhold the money amounted to unlawful retaliation against the Ivy League school, which resisted White House demands to alter its policies and governance.

White House spokesperson Liz Huston criticized the decision, calling it predictable and politically motivated. She argued that Harvard had failed to protect students from harassment and discrimination and emphasized that the university has no constitutional right to taxpayer funding.

The dispute underscores President Trump’s broader confrontation with elite academic institutions and follows criticism from Democrats over his administration’s sharp rebukes of federal judges who rule against its policies.
