President Donald Trump announced Monday that he is placing Washington, D.C.'s police department under federal control and deploying 800 National Guard troops to the capital to combat what he described as a surge in violent crime.
Flanked by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Attorney General Pam Bondi, Trump said the action was necessary to "reestablish law, order and public safety."
It is a bad day for criminals in Washington, D.C. Thank you, President @realDonaldTrump, for taking action to protect people in our Nation’s Capital. The Guard units are expected to arrive within a week, joining hundreds of federal agents already operating in the city.
Trump criticized Democrat-led cities for lax crime enforcement, pointing to similar deployments in Los Angeles earlier this year.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser disputed Trump’s claims, noting violent crime is at a 30-year low and overall crime fell 7% this year. Still, Washington ranks high in gun violence among major U.S. cities.
I fully support President Trump’s move to crack down on crime in DC. It’s not safe & anyone who lives there or visits knows it.

The current state of our nation's capital is a disgrace. There are reports that DC police cooked the books on crime stats to hide just how bad it is. pic.twitter.com/TOsH2oimx2
The president’s authority over the D.C. National Guard allows him to bypass state-level approval, as in past deployments, including after the January 6, 2021, Capitol protest.
