Former UN human rights chief Navanethem “Navi” Pillay has won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to advance peace and international law, according to the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
Pillay, 85, was born in South Africa and serves as a judge on the International Court of Justice.
Committee chairman Joergen Watne Frydnes said her work offered hope to those seeking a more peaceful world. He noted that the award highlights the importance of international law as conflicts increase and legal institutions face political pressure.
The 2026 award marks 125 years since the Nobel Peace Prize was established in 1901. The prize carries an award of 12 million Swedish kronor.
Previous winners include Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who received the 2025 prize for her efforts toward democratic change.
