Mark Thompson will remain chairman and editor-in-chief of CNN as Paramount’s merger with Warner Bros. Discovery takes effect Tuesday, according to CNN.

The new company, Skydance, will be led by CEO David Ellison and co-CEO Ynon Kreiz. Thompson will report to both executives and retain his editorial responsibilities. The decision ends months of uncertainty over CNN’s future under the Ellison family.

Thompson said Skydance supports CNN’s digital strategy and editorial independence. He previously led the BBC and The New York Times Co. before joining CNN in 2023.

CNN and CBS News will initially remain separate. CBS News chief Bari Weiss will keep her position, although the companies could eventually pursue closer cooperation or a broader news division merger.

A court-mandated five-member board will oversee editorial standards at both networks. Skydance has six months to appoint its members.

The heavily indebted company faces pressure to reduce costs while protecting profitable assets such as CNN and expanding digital businesses.
