The US wholesale inflation accelerated in August as rising energy costs added to price pressures, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data reported by CNN.
The Producer Price Index rose 5.4% over the year through August, up from 4.8% in July. On a monthly basis, producer prices increased 0.4%, compared with 0.1% the previous month.
Goods prices climbed 1.1% after declining 0.4% in July. The report said energy prices were responsible for more than three-fourths of the monthly increase in goods prices, surging 4.2%.
Core wholesale inflation, which excludes more volatile categories, remained more restrained. Core prices rose 0.2% in August from July0.4% in July.
The data could complicate the Federal Reserve’s efforts to bring inflation toward its 2% target. Officials are scheduled to meet next week, with prices rose 3.4% in August and 27.6% annually, reflecting strong markets largely expecting rates to remain unchanged.
Outside energy, electronic component prices rose 3.4% in August and 27.6% annually, reflecting strong demand linked to the artificial intelligence buildout.
