Why Analysts Are Flagging Political Bias In Chinese AI Systems

New research warns that Chinese artificial intelligence models gaining global users are promoting narratives aligned with Beijing’s political interests. Analysts say systems developed by firms such as Alibaba and DeepSeek combine low cost and strong performance with built in ideological guardrails.

Researchers at the China Media Project found that Alibaba’s Qwen model follows internal rules to portray China in a positive light, emphasizing achievements while avoiding criticism.

When asked about other countries, the system aimed for neutrality. No similar restrictions applied when discussing the United States.

Separately, Estonian Foreign Intelligence Service reported that DeepSeek downplays security concerns and inserts pro China messaging into responses.

Experts note all AI reflects its training environment. In China’s case, tight political controls appear to shape how models address sensitive global issues.
