Around 20,000 children in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region are now studying in underground schools set up inside subway stations, basements, and bunkers as Russian attacks continue to threaten civilian areas. According to Al Jazeera, many traditional school buildings have been damaged or destroyed during the war.
One such “metroschool” operates inside the Oleksandr Maselsky subway station, where teachers conduct classes in small rooms while trains pass nearby. School officials say the underground location offers protection from missiles, drones, and artillery strikes that frequently target the city.
