A federal appeals court halted Tennessee’s scheduled execution of Christa Pike on Wednesday, about an hour before it was due to begin, according to the Associated Press.
The court ordered a review of whether allegations that Pike experienced sexual abuse and rape as a child were adequately considered before she received a death sentence.
Witnesses had already gathered at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville when the court issued its order around 9 a.m.
According to AP, it remained unclear whether Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti would challenge the ruling or how long the execution could be delayed.
