President Donald Trump threatened to block the opening of a major new bridge linking the United States and Canada, escalating tensions with Washington’s northern neighbor, according to CNN.
In a Truth Social post Monday, Trump said he would not allow the Gordie Howe International Bridge between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, to open until Canada compensates the U.S. and treats it with what he called “fairness and respect.”

The $4 billion bridge has completed major construction and is expected to open later this year.
The bridge is financed by Canada but jointly owned by Ottawa and the state of Michigan under a 2012 agreement. Michigan officials say the project supports U.S. jobs and the auto industry.
Trump’s comments come amid broader trade threats against Canada, including possible tariffs ahead of this year’s review of the USMCA trade pact.
