The CIA is reportedly exploring plans to arm Kurdish opposition groups in an effort to pressure Iran’s government and potentially spark an uprising, according to CNN. U.S. officials have held discussions with Iranian Kurdish factions and leaders in Iraq about providing military support as the conflict with Tehran intensifies.
Kurdish armed groups operating along the Iran Iraq border are expected to play a role in possible ground operations in western Iran. Some Kurdish factions have publicly called on Iranian military forces to defect.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has responded with drone strikes against Kurdish positions near the border.
The plan would likely require cooperation from Iraqi Kurdistan to allow weapons transit and staging areas. Iraqi officials have warned they will not allow their territory to be used for attacks into Iran.
Analysts say the strategy could stretch Iran’s security forces and encourage unrest inside the country. Critics warn that arming militias could destabilize the region and risk undermining Iraqi sovereignty.
