Why Is Washington Demanding EU Deliver On Trade Commitments

The United States is increasing pressure on the European Union to revise regulations Washington says could restrict transatlantic trade and burden American companies.

According to Reuters, U.S. Ambassador to the EU Andrew Puzder urged Brussels to honor commitments made during trade negotiations with President Donald Trump in 2025. He specifically pointed to EU rules requiring large companies to disclose environmental and social impacts across global supply chains.

The renewed dispute follows the implementation of tariff commitments agreed by Washington and Brussels last year. Reuters reported that officials could issue joint statements on non-tariff trade issues this autumn.

The EU has already reduced the reach of some sustainability regulations. However, Washington says those changes do not go far enough. Several EU measures now apply mainly to the largest companies, while compliance deadlines have also been extended.
