Why President Trump Is Suing The IRS And Treasury For $10 Billion

President Donald Trump has filed a $10 billion lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Treasury Department, accusing the agencies of failing to protect his confidential tax records. The suit was filed Thursday in federal court in Miami.

Trump alleges that an IRS contractor unlawfully leaked his tax returns, along with those of his sons and the Trump Organization, to media outlets in 2020. His sons Eric and Don Jr., along with the company, are listed as plaintiffs.

Former IRS contractor Charles Littlejohn was sentenced in 2024 to five years in prison for leaking the records to The New York Times and ProPublica. Prosecutors said Littlejohn abused his access for political reasons.

The lawsuit claims the IRS failed to establish basic safeguards. The Treasury Department has since canceled contracts with Booz Allen Hamilton. Federal agencies declined to comment.
