Prices for Chinese-made drone components sent to Russia have surged sharply since Moscow’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, highlighting Russia’s growing dependence on China as Western sanctions cut off alternatives.
Customs data show export prices for Chinese drone radar systems bound for Russia rose more than sixfold compared with prewar levels, even as prices for other countries fell.

Volumes shipped to Russia declined, suggesting suppliers are charging more amid limited options. Radar systems are critical for long-range surveillance missions.
Other dual-use equipment also saw steep increases. Wireless communication gear used in drone swarms rose 20 percent, while laser guidance systems jumped 56 percent.
Prices for engines, motors, and infrared imaging equipment climbed as well.

The Bank of Finland Institute for Emerging Economies reported that prices for sanctioned Chinese goods exported to Russia increased an average of 87 percent between 2021 and 2024.
Analysts say China’s leverage could constrain Russia’s war effort.
