Russia will back China if a conflict erupts over Taiwan, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an interview with Russia’s Tass news agency, according to Kyodo News.

Lavrov cited a treaty between Moscow and Beijing that commits both countries to mutual support in defending territorial integrity. His remarks come amid rising tensions over Taiwan and growing concerns in Japan about regional security.

Lavrov also criticized Japan’s push to expand its military capabilities, warning Tokyo to consider the consequences of what he described as accelerated militarization.

Japan has increased defense spending under Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, citing threats from China and regional instability.

Japan’s concerns intensified after Chinese military pressure on Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its own territory.

China and Russia have also conducted joint bomber flights near Japan, moves Tokyo has called demonstrations of force.

The comments underscore deepening China-Russia alignment as tensions over Taiwan continue to draw in US allies.
