Worker Dies After Falling 10 Metres At Rome’s Colosseum

The closure was initially planned for the section where the accident occurred but was later extended across the entire archaeological site.

Rome’s Colosseum was temporarily closed to visitors on Wednesday after a 22-year-old specialist rope worker died in a fall while installing a new lighting system, according to Italy’s Culture Ministry.

Andrea Moretti fell about 10 metres from near the amphitheater’s highest point during an overnight shift on Tuesday. Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli expressed condolences to Moretti’s family and described the death as a tragedy.

The ministry said authorities delayed shutting the entrances until the first group of tourists had left to avoid creating potentially dangerous crowds outside.

The Colosseum, built between 70 and 72 A.D., normally attracts tens of thousands of visitors daily. According to the Colosseum Archaeological Park, it generally closes only on January 1 and December 25.

Italy records frequent workplace fatalities. INAIL data cited in the report indicates an average of three workers die in workplace accidents each day.
