More than 200,000 have been displaced by the fighting after the Three Brotherhood Alliance - combining the Arakan Army, Ta'ang National Liberation Army and Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army - launched its Operation 1027 offensive against the military on October 27.

The 2021 coup which brought the ruling junta to power also saw the formation of the parallel National Unity Government by pro-democracy politicians who, and allied with various Ethnic Armed Organisations, has launched a “Road to Naypyitaw” campaign which it says is aimed at taking control of the capital.
