Private-sector hiring in the United States slowed significantly in July, with employers adding just 44,000 jobs, according to payroll processor ADP. The figure was well below the Dow Jones estimate of 75,000 jobs and down from June's revised total of 95,000.
Small businesses with fewer than 50 employees created the most jobs. Annual pay growth remained steady at 4.4% for workers who stayed in their roles, while employees changing jobs saw wages rise 7%.
The report comes ahead of the U.S. government's monthly employment data, with economists expecting 83,000 new jobs and an unemployment rate of 4.2%, according to Dow Jones estimates.
