America is facing an energy crunch as artificial intelligence drives unprecedented demand for power. Data centers fueling the AI boom are consuming vast amounts of electricity, causing wholesale prices to spike in communities from Virginia to Ohio.

Over the past five years, costs near major data hubs have soared by as much as 267%, according to Bloomberg.

President Donald Trump’s administration has pledged to cut energy bills in half while simultaneously promoting a “golden age” of AI and manufacturing, Axios reported.

An executive order issued this summer accelerates federal permitting for data centers and transmission lines to support tech growth. However, this surge has triggered bipartisan pushback as local governments question tax incentives and the strain on power grids.

Some tech giants are now building private power plants, creating what The Wall Street Journal calls an “energy Wild West.” America’s energy future, once seen as boundless, now hinges on balancing AI ambition with affordability.
