An Air Force major was arrested on the steps of the U.S. Capitol after participating in a demonstration calling for the impeachment of President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance.

Major Jason Watson joined activists and supporters of the impeachment effort before walking toward a restricted area of the Capitol, where U.S. Capitol Police took him into custody.

Before his arrest, Watson said his actions were motivated by the oath he took as a military officer more than two decades ago.

He alleged that the administration had exceeded its constitutional authority by undertaking military operations in Venezuela, Cuba and Iran without proper congressional authorization.

Watson also accused the administration of violating due process rights and encouraging violence against peaceful demonstrators, while insisting that his protest was based on constitutional principles rather than partisan politics.

The demonstration included Representative Al Green and members of the advocacy group Free Speech For People, which says it has collected more than one million signatures urging Congress to begin impeachment proceedings.

Capitol Police arrested Watson after he entered the restricted area, while demonstrators chanted in support. Authorities have not released additional details regarding the charges stemming from the arrest.
